MobiliseHER focuses on three diverse Indian cities—Bengaluru, Kochi, and Ahmedabad. These cities were selected to explore ways to make mobility systems gender-responsive, considering their unique urban challenges and governance styles. By studying their distinct transportation networks and policies, MobiliseHER aims to identify practical strategies for creating inclusive transport systems.

FOCUS CITIES
We engage local and national government agencies, the public and private transport sector, civil society organisations.

Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, home to over 7.7 million residents (Census 2023), is recognised for its innovative mobility solution, including India’s first complete Bust Rapid Transit System
(BRTS) launched in 2009. Spanning 490 sq. Kilometres, the city’s ringradial road network and well-integrated mobility and development plans support efficient travel and
ecomomic activities. Despite these advancements, disparities in access and safety for women and marginalised groups highlight the need for equity-focused interventions.

Bengaluru
Bengaluru is a bustling metropolis home to over 8.4 million residents (Census 2011 India) spread across 741 square kilometres. Urban mobility in the city is a complex challenge shaped by rapid urbanisation, a growing population, and diverse travel needs. Known for its vibrant economy and innovation, Bengaluru is working towards improving mobility by integrating technology to create inclusive systems that cater to all including women and marginalised groups.

Scaling impact
The lessons and insights gained from Bengaluru, Kochi, and Ahmedabad will be shared with civil society organisations, policymakers, and transport agencies across the country. By equipping stakeholders in ten additional cities with technical skills and participatory planning tools, MobiliseHER aims to expand its reach and influence. This effort seeks to accelerate the adoption of gender-inclusive transport solutions nationwide, driving a shift toward safer, more sustainable, and equitable urban mobility.
Kochi
Kochi, Kerala’s biggest port city has a population of over 2.1 million (Census 2011 India) and is spread across 440 square kilometres. It is a vibrant coastal city celebrated for its tourism and trade, and serves as Kerala commercial, industrial, and financial capital. Its unique geography and landscapes have driven the development of innovative transport systems, including the Kochi Water Metro. However, ensuring last-mile connectivity and addressing the diverse mobility needs of its residents remain critical. MobiliseHER is working to integrate gender-responsive mobility solutions, thereby enhancing Kochi’s potential as a model for inclusive urban transport.
